Son of Man

Having just started the sermon series on Daniel, I will share that I am intrigued by the section we will get to later about the “son of man.” It is hinted at in the Fiery Furnace of chapter 3, but is mentioned outright in Daniel 7. Daniel 7:13-14 reads, “In my vision at night I looked, and there before me was one like a son of man, coming with the clouds of heaven. He approached the Ancient of Days and was led into his presence. He was given authority, glory and sovereign power; all nations and peoples of every language worshiped him. His dominion is an everlasting dominion that will not pass away, and his kingdom is one that will never be destroyed.”

The phrase “one like a son of man” indicates that the external appearance of the individual does not tell the whole story, that there is something deeper. And that the Ancient of Days, referring to God the Father in this case, gives this person a universal kingdom which will be everlasting must also mean that the kingdom he is given is the Kingdom of God. It certainly denotes a christ, a king of God’s people, but a king and a kingdom unlike anything the world has seen before. This king is to be worshiped by all the nations of the world. Worshiped. He will be God.

This title “Son of Man” was used by Jesus more than any other. It melds together all of the ideas most essential for understanding himself. He is God. He is Christ/ Messiah. He, his rule, his kingdom is everlasting. He is a human descended of Adam. No wonder Jesus liked to use it most when describe himself.
We are part of the great dominion of Jesus. We worship him.

All glory to the Son of Man,

Pastor Dave
